Performance Contractors partnered with ExxonMobil Product Solutions as the EPC contractor for a major construction upgrade at the Baytown Olefins Plant. The project involved the installation of a new 220kTA pyrolysis furnace within the BOPX unit, designed to increase processing capacity by 15%, enabling production of approximately 850,000 pounds of ethylene per day.
Engineering and Procurement services were subcontracted to Kellogg Brown and Root, LLC (KBR), marking the first time Performance Contractors directly managed an engineering and procurement firm. This strategic partnership enabled a construction-driven engineering approach from the outset, enhancing overall project alignment and execution. The Performance/KBR team worked in close collaboration with six international suppliers, including modular fabrication partners, to ensure on-time delivery. A unified, safety-first culture and effective workface planning drove exceptional quality and productivity outcomes, evidenced by a weld reject rate of just 0.16%.
Spanning 17 months, the project was completed ahead of the scheduled unit-wide turnaround and under budget. Most notably, the team achieved 521,951 safe work hours without a single recordable incident, highlighting the success of its robust safety programs and collaborative execution strategy.
