From Louisiana to Iraq, and now to industrial job sites across Texas, Brenda Citizen’s journey is one of service, dedication, and faith. A U.S. Army and Louisiana National Guard veteran, Brenda spent 15 years in uniform before joining Performance Contractors, where she’s been a valued team member since 2020.
Military service runs deep in Brenda’s family. Her grandfather, cousins, brother, and she all served in the U.S. Army. For Brenda, joining the military was an opportunity to travel, see the world, and further her education. She began her career in 1996 as a combat medic after completing basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Over the years, she took on a variety of roles, from secretary to mail clerk, and in 2010, she deployed to Iraq.
Life in the military taught Brenda discipline and focus. “Things were different—up early in the morning, getting a day’s work done before many in civilian life even get up. I loved it,” she recalled. Rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7) gave her the chance to lead and mentor others—skills that have carried into her civilian career.
Before the Army, Brenda had already worked in construction, and when she transitioned out of the service, Performance Contractors offered her the opportunity to return to that field. Today, she works as a safety attendant, hole watch, and fire watch, often traveling to support projects. “Performance hired me and helped a veteran out,” she said. “They respect veterans and women, and they’re professional.”
Brenda brings to her work the values she carried in the military: respect, knowledge, honesty, and leadership. She encourages other veterans to consider a career at Performance. “It’s a good company to work for. They take care of you. You can move up or just work and make the money.”
Outside of work, Brenda enjoys a quieter pace—spending time at home in Humble, Texas, with her son and their dog. She’s active in her church and values family life above all.
From combat medic to construction safety, Brenda Citizen has lived a life of service. We’re proud to honor her story and grateful to have her as part of the Performance family.
